Welcome
As an artist I have to sit down regularly and review my Statement for exhibitions. But I thought I would just pose and answer four questions: Where, What, How and Why?
Where: Of all the places in the World I have been, there is nowhere like Wales and in Wales there is nowhere like Pembrokeshire. I love it here and that is why I chose to live and paint here – just look at the light!
What: You can see from my work that it is the sea, the sky and the land which inspire me; but I also love trees, especially the thorn trees, the people and many others aspects of Wales.
How: I work in oils and water-based media on board and paper and find it more rewarding to experiment with different combinations of media and support and different ways of applying, manipulating or, when necessary, removing paint, rather than sticking to tried and tested methods which produce predictable, but sometimes boring results. Effect is the thing; not mechanics.
Why: When things move me I have to paint them. A subject sparks interest, an emotional reaction, and I try in my work to transmit something of that emotion, that spark, that feeling which prompted me to paint it in the first place. That’s enough – I’ll let the paintings speak for me now.
